Dr Philip McClelland

I am an Emergency Medicine Consultant in the Belfast Trust, the Musculoskeletal Lead within the emergency departments and the Mater Emergency Department Clinical Lead. I also work as a Consultant on the Regional Major Trauma ward based at RVH.

Outside of the NHS, I work as the Ulster Rugby Academy Doctor, providing cover for the Senior Ulster Rugby team and have been the Ireland U20 doctor at three U20 Rugby World Cups. I am a Pro 14 Independent Match Day Doctor and was a Match Day Doctor at the 2017 Womens Rugby World Cup at Kingspan Stadium. In this role I review all head injuries in a game and have ultimate say in who is concussed and must be removed from play.

I am the only Northern Ireland doctor to hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and a Fellowship of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (Ire) and I have a Diploma in Sport and Exercise Medicine. I'm the only N.I Emergency Medicine consultant recognised by the major insurers (BUPA, AXA, AVIVA etc).

A large part of my job in Ulster Rugby is managing concussions from the moment of impact until full return to play. I manage a variety of professional, academy, amateur and schools athletes and deal with issues such as…

  1. Diagnostic uncertainty

  2. Patient/parental anxiety

  3. Prolonged symptoms

  4. Multiple or repeat concussions

  5. Managing a return to play around school/university or work

  6. Sign off prior to return to contact sport
