ULSTER CONCUSSION CLINIC
Dr Philip McClelland
MB BCh BAO FRCEM FFSEM DipSEM PGCertCE
As part of the concussion assessment I will take a full medical and concussion history, examine the patient’s neurological and vestibular system, use tools such as SCAT 5 and formulate a graduated return to play schedule tailored for the individual.
Concussion Subtype diagnosis
1) Cervical (neck pain)
2) Vestibular (balance problems)
3) Occular (eye problems)
Each subtype has its own unique picture, treatment and return to learn/work/play advice.
Return to Play
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of care for complicated or repeat concussions is deciding the "down time" before restarting contact and tailoring a return to play schedule that fits with the individual. I have experience at guiding many schools through to professional players through a return to play schedule and back to full health. As an Emergency Medicine Consultant in the local Trauma Centre i also have a wealth of experience of assessing a large variety of head injuries from not just sport but RTCs and personal injury.
